Scrapbook of South Carolina State Dispensary memorabilia, 1894.

Volume contains clippings and ephemera relating to the issue of prohibition, and more specifically to the South Carolina Dispensary System and the insurrection in Darlington, South Carolina in 1894. Clippings contain information about the "Darlington Whiskey Rebellion," Gov. Benjamin R. Tillman, prohibition, and the South Carolina State Dispensary. A printed form on the inside cover entitled "The Darlington Martyrs" provides spaces for signatures and amounts of money donated to erect a monument in memory of the martyrs, Frank E. Norment and Louis Redmond, who were "murdered by whiskey spies, at Darlington, S.C., March 30th, 1894." Other ephemera include labels - marked "South Carolina State Dispensary"--Bottles of brandy and whiskey distilled in Columbia (S.C.) and in cities in other states. One label carries the seal of The State Board of Control, South Carolina certifying the purity of "this brand of Liquor."
